Bear with Cubs Hopi Sterling Silver Overlay Pendant Necklace Floyd Namingha Lomakuyvaya
Vintage Hopi sterling silver overlay pendant necklace featuring a bear with cubs on a triangle-shaped pendant. Above the bear is a curved row of five small faces, seeming to suggest she carries her cubs with her through travels. (At first glance, I thought the faces were cat like.) The stylized bear fetish has a Z-shaped blaze marking on its side, which is believed to signify fast speed bear, an interesting marking not quite like a heart line or markings of the spirit bear. This Hopi silver overlay pendant was hand crafted by Hopi artist Floyd Namingha Lomakuyvaya, a member of the Strap Clan in the village of Shungopavi who began creating silver work in 1973.
Pendant measures 35mm wide and 26mm high, with the added height of the bail taking it up to 36.5 mm. Margaret Nickelson Wright's book on Hopi silver hallmarks confirms this pendant bears the T-shaped antelope rattle hallmark of Floyd Namingha Lomakuyvaya. The 19 inch sterling silver oval link chain is marked 925.
